Just finished the first draft of my sermon Standing on the Side of Love. This the final sermon in what turned out to be an eight part series I called A Gospel for Us. My premise is that in the same way that various sayings and stories about Jesus circulated for more than a generation before they were plugged into the narrative of his life called a gospel--so too Unitarian Universalist has a heritage of sayings, wisdom and events that float amongst us and could become a narrative of our free faith. Standing on the Side of Love comes close to being an tapestry that many of our other strands reinforce--but its still not a narrative. This concluding sermon in the series starts with how the hymn came to be and the way it has grown in usefulness among Unitarian Universalists. I then turn to consider Standing on the Side of Love in the light of the other phrases and sayings that I pulled from our tradition The Religious of Jesus not the Religion About Jesus Revelation is not Sealed Likeness to God Give Them not Hell but hope Every Night a Child is Born is a Holy Night We Need not Think Alike to Love Alike Onward and Upward Forever I then look at what Standing on the Side of Love looks like with the four different kinds of love one can find in philosophical thought. I dont pretend to come up with a Gospel Narrative--but I believe these things taken together do form A Gospel for Us. Hope to see longs FB Friends at the 1UC in OKC this week, Worship at 11--lots and lots and lots of stuff at 10!
