Just finished watching 42, a movie about Jackie Robinson one of the first African Americans to play Baseball, then I thought about the Help, 12 years a slave, The Butler... It seems like it is in fashion to put right the past by telling past stories of injustice, or ill treatment.. it makes people confront the horrors of the past.. we all watch these movies and cheer for Jackie and hate those wicked people who were so racist..... but what worries me, is that it is easy to do so whilst watching a movie..it is so much harder to have lived in those times and dared to be different...and to challenge the natural order of the day..as it is the same today..what is the natural order today??? Is it to see Maori denied their rights as Tangata whenua... Or the plight of our women/sisters and mothers living under the threat of domestic violence from us their men/ their partners/husbands their loved ones..or Gay people maligned or demonised?? Or is it the invisibility of the Poor in Aotearoa?? I realise the importance of these movies but the real lessons learnt are the ones we address in the real world and in real time.. I was 12 years old when Sachheen Littlefeather said this to the World..
