Just found out that our insurance doesnt cover respite care in a nursing home for military retirees, only for active duty beneficiaries. They DO cover short-term inpatient hospital admissions (1 to 5 days) to manage symptoms, so the hospice nurse is coming tomorrow to evaluate Mikes agitation, sleeplessness, and the frequent hiccups and abdominal spasms hes been having. Its possible he may need admission to get his meds balanced to address those problems, so the result would be the same thing: respite. Mike says hes not thrilled about the hospital setting, but if it stops the spasms and the out-of-control anxiety he went through last night, hes willing to put up with all the hassles of being a very short-term hospital patient.
