Just gave live TV interview to Global News BC1 concerning new sanctions imposed by Canada today against Russia and separatists in Ukraine. My take is that such sanctions might some effect, like in the case of Dobrolet. But political science research and many previous cases, such as Cuba and Iran, show that sanctions by themselves are unlikely to resolve the current civil war in Ukraine and to force Russia to end its support for separatists, including a possible Russian military intervention in the form of peacekeepers. A more effective would be to have a peaceful resolution of the conflict with negotiations involving Western governments, Russia, the Ukrainian government, and separatists. This was my take given also to a CBC TV reporter today, but it is unlikely to be broadcast.
