Just going to ramble for a while. Im feeling very deflated. Worse than that, I feel like a gullible fool. I have always thought of myself as a pragmatist, and mostly what I read in the press I take with a grain of salt. And thats what I did when I read the plethora of news articles heralding the BBCs panorama programme to walk again as an announcement of a miracle cure for paralysis. I had decided not to watch the programme, as I have always been let down in my nearly 12 years in the wheelchair by false hopes masquerading as breakthroughs. But I guess there must be something inside me that is stronger than my natural cynicism, something that believes fairytale endings can be real. So I watched it, and was genuinely touched by the bravery of the Polish man at the centre of the furore. But lets face facts here, after complicated surgical procedures and 20 months of intensive therapy, being able to drag your legs behind you assisted by bungee cords strapped to your arms and leaning heavily on a heavy wooden frame on wheels for 20 feet really not my idea of walking. This was no miracle cure, in fact in my informed opinion Im not sure its that much of a breakthrough. I have no doubt that a contribution to a cure way, way, way in the future is being made, but as usual those of us that are living this now, were led to believe by an irresponsible press that maybe there was hope for us in our lifetimes and once again had our hopes dashed. There are no miracles, and tell people otherwise is just plain cruel. Normal service will be resumed as soon as possible. Thank you for allowing me to vent my frustration.
