Just got a call from one of Matthews teachers for the coming year - TopicsExpress

Just got a call from one of Matthews teachers for the coming year to let me know that she knows that coming during the open house times on Monday will probably be too much for him, so shes going to be available after 3 for Matthew to drop by. She also left me her personal cell phone number so that I may call her if I have any questions. For the record, every single SPED teacher that Matthew has ever had has given me her cell phone number so that I may reach them at any time. This is not something Ive ever asked for or even expected. Its just something that every single one of them has done. (Many of the non-SPED teachers have done this as well. Its again not something Ive asked for. Theyve simply volunteered.) I share this to remind everyone that our teachers ARE absolutely committed to helping our students grow into the best that they can be. This is why I believe that tenure is necessary because our teachers need protection from superintendents and board members who have no clue whatsoever what educating children requires. This is why the answers that many of our prospective board members have given concerning tenure are dangerous. https://m.facebook/groups/334892706532377?view=permalink&id=775882409100069 Tenure does not mean that a teacher has a lifetime job. It simply means that an administrator cannot fire a teacher who has proven his/her commitment to and skill for education for at least three years simply because the superintendent wishes to hire his friends for that job. (Our superintendent has a long history of putting his friends into jobs.) A tenured teacher can absolutely be fired. All that tenure means is that there has to be cause for firing a tenured teacher. FAR more often than not, tenure protects our best teachers from harassment. The occurrence of tenure protecting a bad teacher is possible, but that is in the tiny minority. Bad teachers, even if they have tenure, can and should absolutely be fired. All that it requires is that the administrator demonstrate cause. And doing so is FAR easier than administrators and superintendents like to imply. The reason that administrators and superintendents complain about tenure is simple: theyre lazy. I stand with teachers. I stand with teachers who go FAR beyond what is required of them and not with lazy administrators and superintendents. I will not support a candidate for school board who is not willing to do the same.
