Just got back from seeing The Maze Runner! Now, before I reveal my thoughts, I need to get something off my chest: I am really getting sick of so many critics complaining about all these YA adaptations! Look, I get it, Twilight and The Hunger Games got really popular and everyone wants to copy them, but that doesnt mean they all suck! Case in point this movie which, while not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, is still pretty damn good! As always, heres a few highlights from the film: 1. The premise. Basically, take the spirit of Lord of the Flies, the structure of The Hunger Games and put the two in a blender. Dont worry, its a lot better than I probably made it sound. 2. The cast. This is a weird compliment, but the best thing about this movie might be the fact that I barely recognized half the actors in this film, which is fine, because this is one hell of a cast! I could tell in a handful of scenes that they must have had a ball shooting this movie! 3. The action. Yeah, there were plenty of cool action beats sprinkled throughout the film, though thats sort of to be expected from the genre. Alright, remember when I said this wasnt perfect? Yeah, here are some of the things that need improvement 1. The screenplay. This ones kinda minor, but I felt like the movie could lose at least one or two exposition dumps. I get why theyre important, but maybe next time dont over do it. 2. The ending. Not gonna spoil anything, but Im taking huge points off for this ending! Its not the WORST ENDING EVAR like some critics are making it out to be, but it does reek of we want this to be a franchise! Overall Ill give this a fresh rating of 3.3/5. I still recommend seeing this, and despite what I just said about the ending, I do want this movie to succeed. Its got an interesting premise, and I wanna see how things progress!
