Just got in baby gray squirrel #2, a tiny boy, slightly older than my tiny girl but not by much. The finders told me that I am the only one taking mammals, the skunks only rehabber in Winchendon who is making a killing with her monster donation jar at Agway has a message on her machine stating that she is not taking any wildlife. That means that all her skunks have most likely already been released, same age as mine, and I wouldnt dream of releasing them this early. Wow!... Maybe people should know about this? I wonder if this was vacation money. Sorry, just really angry over hearing that! I also got company for my little mouse girl, another thank goodness also girl, almost identical in size but a little lighter in color. My mini now weighs 4.7 grams, the newbie 4.8 grams. Little sparrow passed over this afternoon. She held on and I kept hoping she would start eating since I saw her peck at seeds, and trying to feed her did not go well because she would not swallow. All I could do was give her subcutaneous fluids to keep her hydrated and let her drink a dribble off the side of her beak now and then. She was on pain medication to get the swelling down but there must have been too much damage. The dove with the chest puncture is doing well and is trying to stand I promised her she is out of her nest and carrier and in with the others as soon as she can stand alright, be patient, little dove! The pigeon had his wing wrap removed last night and the wing looks okay. Id have to test fly him in the kitchen but want to wait a few more days before I try that. We dont want new injuries, now, do we? Skunkies are looking great! The smaller boys fur is filling in beautifully. But they are way too young to be released, the smaller boy is so timid that he would not do well. They have it hard enough as it is, I dont want to add to their stress with releasing them while they are still growing and need the extra calories. Gino the car-struck opossum has filled out nicely! He zips about the house at a nice clip now and has started to interact a bit with the dogs in that he pauses and looks directly at them before he gingerly either walks around them or turns around. The cats watch him with only mild, if any, interest. Ill have to put him on the scale but am guessing he is at least 8-9 pounds now. He was only 5.4 pounds on arrival. Sweetie, aka MangyGirl, loves the outdoor cage. She constantly interacts with other squirrels, in particular a young boy who lived in her cage until I evicted him. The two seem to get along fine. I am not hurrying her release because I discovered that we have a not-so-welcome daily visitor: a huge female redtail hawlk. So far she is concentrating on the Blue Jay nest in a neighboring tree, with no success that I have witnessed, but that means I have to work around her arrival time with feeding my released squirrels so they dont become easy prey. The little Cedar waxwing has started to feed himself, Hooooray!!! No more running out in the kitchen every half hour! Pictures of newbies will come later, I have to finish my work first.
