Just got off a flight that came equipped with an inconsolable baby. The woman next to me winced in sympathy and said, Oh, poor baby, and I nodded and said, And poor mama, and my seat mate nodded back. I sat and prayed for that babys ears to clear and for peace for them both, and I thought about the flights Ive taken with my babies like the one when I was boarding with 4 month old twins and watched another passenger say, Oh, good grief, theyre getting on our flight. I wanted to roll up in a ball and cry, or walk up to her and say, I promise this will be harder on me than it is on you, or, you know, shove a bottle in her mouth to show her my best method for keeping people quiet. But I didnt do any of those things; I just slunk onto the plane, sure we were pariahs, unwanted and barely endured. My babies did great on that flight. I think. I dont really remember. Its all a blur, the survival that was that time of life. But my kids did great on some flights and cried in others, and my point is this: I didnt know there were people who were rooting for me, too. People who were sympathizing. People who were saying poor baby and poor mama and wishing us the best. So just in case youre that mama today - the one whos working your butt off and hearing the criticism and, well, hurting - I want you to know there are other people on the figurative plane and were sending you our love. xoxo
