Just got results back from the UGI (barium/chalk solution, gas crystals, rolling on a table - all kinds of fun), and the only problem they found was acid reflux. This is good in that: 1) more severe problems are unlikely and 2) it gives confirmation to the premise of one theory. In addition to the chest pain of heartburn, which can feel cardiac because nerves are stupid, acidic irritation of the esophagus can in turn cause irritation of the vagus nerve* which wraps around the esophagus and the heart and everything else because nerves are stupid, which can cause palpitations. The good news is that this means empirical grounds for a theory that does not involve my heart exploding and there exists treatment for acid reflux. Deo volente, control of stomach acid through medication/diet/lifestyle can mean an end to esophageal irritation and thereby episodes of chest pain and ultimately palpitations. Plus, on average, people who have to be paranoid about their diet generally live longer for obvious reasons. On the other hand, that means being paranoid about my diet and quite possibly taking medication the rest of my life. Also, were all going to die of Ebola anyway (Texas is already burning, or so the news says) and Ill probably get a thousand years in Purgatory for not accepting and offering up a lifetime of pain and anxiety. But on a serious note, I do want to thank everyone whos said a prayer for me - even/especially that guy who was confused about the Epistle of St. James.
