Just had a long phone chat with my long time comrade friend from Kano. As usual,we rumminated on recent happenings in Nigeria and the lack of vision by our leaders at different levels. We came down to his own state where he lamented poverty and illiteracy as the root of crises in the state. He gave me a ray of hope when he told me they have seriously started working on the psych of many of the illiterates in the states. According to him, whenever politicians failed in their bid to get what they want or get elected, they come back to play the religious and ethnic sentiments on their illiterate constituents. He said on foras now they keep telling their people that the concept of “arne“ (unbeliever) that had been continously used to deride non Muslims is erroneous and divisive. They have continued to tell the non educated that the real arne or non believer is not the Christian or non Muslim. Christianity is one of the “revealed“ religions highly respected by Prophet Muhammed(Peace be unto him). The real arne according to him, are those whom God entrusted with rights and privileges for the poor and oppressed, but have continously breached that trust by stealing funds meant for public infrastructures and impoverishing millions of Nigerians causing unprecedented hardship. They have constituted a large group and spreading their orientation network to include Mosques, markets, schools, okada riders, hospitals and public functions. I was moved by their zeal to restructure the minds of their people. It will be a very huge task because many of these minds have been indoctrinated over years. But their is hope that some people had seen beyond the facade erected over decades to destroy and disunite. I pray that other people and other faiths in Nigeria discover who the true enemy is. That re-awakening will propel us to cast off the ethno- religious shackles and chains inhibiting our long march to greatness. Have a wonderfull weekend.
