Just had an interesting thought sparked by the other thread about real-world physics not working with the ejection of the Moon and all. Its a common and known issue that the physics of the premise really dont work unless you do a LOT of hand-waving. The episode itself attempted to address this a bit by inferring there was something at work with the Unknown Electromagnetic Energy at or under the Nuclear Waste depots. But thats not really enough of an explanation. But anyway - lets roll with it. Assume for the sake of argument there was something buried deep under the crust that produced an energy effect that channeled the blast in such a way as to produce the effects as seen. Whether thats some unknown ore or property of the Moon itself or whether its some alien artifact that got disturbed (like the TME-1 Monolith in 2001) and interacted with the explosion/gravity and mass of the moon or whatever. Etc etc. Point being - what if after intense study of the records of the event, people back on Earth discover that they can reproduce it in a controlled fashion? Lets assume that what they discover is related to the anti-grav tech they already have. Some fundamental force of physics that allows masking of a large mass like the moon such that a big enough thruster can actually MOVE an entire world. You know what I think? First thing that needs to be done with that knowledge is REPLACE the moon with another body in the Solar system so as to stabilize the Earths axis and rotation! Because thats what the moon does for us right now and WITHOUT it, Earth would shortly (within a few decades to a couple of centuries) wobble off its existing axis. Also without the moon the ecology of many plants and animals suffers since they are based on the moon and its phases. So what bodies qualify as a good replacement for Luna? Mercury is a possibility. So are one or more of the Galilean moons of Jupiter. If you wanted to get REALLY ambitious, move Venus or Mars into a paired orbit with Earth so that they can be more easily Terraformed! What do you think?
