Just had my eyes opened WIDE regarding the new election cycle. The tentative timeline for 2016 has a February 16th Presidential primary (and could be as early as January 26th; weve left it up to South Carolina), the regular primary on May 3rd, maybe a run-off on June 7th, the general election on November 8th, followed, perhaps, by run-offs and/or recounts. The impacts are terrible. We get to pay for two separate primaries. What?! And participation in the second, the one that covers every office except President, will be pathetic, opening the door for more polarizing fringe candidates to eke through in a low-turnout environment. Our Elections Services staff and the voting tabulation equipment we use will carry heavier workloads, and for what? Yes, we will be paying more, but we will see fewer people vote (and who knows what kind of outcomes). Only the most conniving and cynical would reform electoral practices to diminish participation and promote extreme outcomes. Combine this twist with the heavy voter suppression elements of our reformed election laws kicking in in 2016, and it shows beyond a shadow of a doubt that our current governor and his allies are, indeed, conniving cynics. Dont believe me? The same crew left to South Carolina the decision for when wed hold our Presidential primary next year. It is disgraceful.
