Just half way through 2013 and St.Kitts-Nevis is ahead of the pace to surpass it’s record setting 34 homicides in a year with 18 homicides recorded so far. St. Kitts and Nevis had a record of 34 homicides set in 2011. The latest victim is reported to be 19-year-old Collin Merchant of Upper Monkey Hill, who was reportedly stabbed to death around 3am this morning at the very popular Beach Bar called Vibes on "De Strip", at the popular Frigate Bay Beach. It is reported the young man was stabbed multiple times and died right on the floor of the popular beach bar. The 18th murder for the year has come in the midst of significant political unrest in the twin island nation. On Friday evening hundreds descended on the main Police Headquarters demanding the release of a former Opposition Party Leader Lindsay Grant who was arrested while leading an anti-government protest. Hundreds converged on the Police Headquarters and demanded Grant’s release with chants of “FREE MR GRANT…..FREE MR GRANT !!!” Grant was eventually freed later that evening after the massive crowd refused to move. The violence on the island has been escalating in recent times and the recent very palpable heightened political tension has only made things on the island even more tense. The heightened political tensions and recent unrest has come due to the failure of Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas’ to have debated a Motion of No Confidence that was filed since December 2012 over 6 months or 200 days ago. The failure or delay to have the motion debated or parliament dissolved has caused significant heightened political tension and unrest with protests and demonstration of thousands now becoming a weekly occurrence. Merchant’s death comes seven days after Antonio ‘Dollar’ Hutton from Nevis was reportedly shot to death at his home in Bath Village.
