Just heard a hopeful yet grim report on KCRW re: Latinos in television - on one hand the sassy and frisky shows of East Los High and D maids were noted - fine - but the the creator of one of these shows said he instructs his writers to write no gang members or gardeners and no accents even tho he had a heavy accent which was lovely - were not gonna find our Scorsese or Coppola this way - Im fine w people working but are we raising the bar? And if the gang members and accents are in OUR hands cannot we bring out authentic voice to them? This is a page from the Richard Rodriguez book of self loathing - we react to what the dominant culture has fakely created - instead of humanizing and taking the harder task of creating truly 3 dimensional characters - what if Father Boyle said no gang members? See the films at LALIFF on todays final day - film makers are on another onda - water & power endeavors to humanize characters from the street in an authentically true way - El Rey does not want to hear pitches about overt Latino content - some of these shows are not union protected for the writers - onward we go - pens in hand our cultura in tact as we work beyond sassy and frisky...
