Just heard the tragic news that Shubhradeep Chakravarty just passed away in Delhi of a brain haemorrage. He was newly married to Meera and we had screened their powerful film En Dino Muzzaffarnagar at Vikalp@Prithvi a few months ago. Actually Shubhradeep had been very depressed because the CBFC did not pass his film. Last week the Appellate tribunal also refused it a certificate. The film is an indictment of Hindutva politics that led to the violence in UP and it is no surprise that under a Modi government no one has the guts to pass this brave, truthful film. He has left us with many memorable films including one on Godhra and one on the encounter killings of Ishrat Jahan and others. I hope and trust that Meera will carry on his legacy and the day will come when India will honour one of its brave sons who always fought to defend its secular character. Gagging order came on 30th June. Today we applied in Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) for redressal of our grievances. We will not go down without a fight. Lets hope for the best. Interestingly, the phenomenon of riots in villages is completely new for the whole region. Documentary film ‘En Dino Muzaffarnagar’ is an investigative documentation of the riots of Muzaffarnagar and its socio – political outfall. It is a tale of what led to the riots at first and what happened in the aftermath of it. This riot was anti-Muslim and more than 60 people died and 42000 people displaced in the process. This documentary is a story of grief, hate and fear that shows how local power politics turns the pages of the history to rewrite it. Why riots happened in the villages for the first time, how riots affected the symbiosis of brotherhood in the villages between two communities and how the loss of the grief stricken farmers can’t be justified with few vested interest playing the power games.
