Just helping to promote: Student Professional Development & Engineering Conference(SPDeC) Malaysia 2014 Universiti Teknologi Petronas Greetings, The American Society of Mechanical Engineers(ASME) - Universiti Teknologi Petronas Student Chapter is organizing the Student Professional Development & Engineering Conference(SPDeC) Malaysia 2014. We from the organizing committee would like to extend our warmest invitations to your institution to join us in this national-level conference. The details of the conference are as follows: Date: 31st March - 4th April 2014 Venue: Undercroft, Universiti Teknologi Petronas, Perak Darul Ridzuan. During the five-day conference, five(5) competitions will be conducted. They are as stated and described below: i) Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition This competition requires participants to do a presentation orally with visual aids. Each participant is allowed 15 minutes for their presentation and a 5-minute Q&A session thereafter. The subject matter of each presentation must address a technical, economic or environmental aspect of engineering or other basic engineering themes. Individuals that decide to compete in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition may not compete in the Old Guard Poster Presentation Competition. The winner will stand a chance to represent Malaysia to the 2014 District G SPDC in Pakistan. ii) Old Guard Poster Presentation Competition This competition requires participants to design a poster no larger than 48 inches(122 cm) by 36 inches(91.4 cm) unfolded. Subject matter is to be related to some area in the field of mechanical engineering. Posters must only be presented visually to the panel judges without any form of oral presentation. Individuals that decide to compete in the Old Guard Poster Presentation Competition may not compete in the Old Guard Oral Presentation Competition. The winner will stand a chance to represent Malaysia to the 2014 District G SPDC in Pakistan. iii) Mobile Apps Design(MAD) Challenge This competition requires participants to design a fully-functional mobile application and present it on a mobile device(i.e. smartphones or tablets). There is no restriction to which operating system to be used but the organizers must be notified of the selected operating system and mobile device used. This is to allow the organizers to prepare the necessary equipment for the participants presentation of their mobile application. Participants may compete alone or in a group of not more than 5 people. Only one member is allowed to present for each group competitors. iv) Student Design Competition(SDC): Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) The theme for this years SDC is the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV). This competition requires participants to work in a team of not more than 5 members. Participants are required to design and build a UAV that should be able to maneuver through gates while carrying a load and drop the load carried onto a target within a certain period of time. Points will be awarded and the team with the highest score is the winner. Before being allowed to enter the game field, each UAV must undergo a rigorous inspection by the judging team at the conference. The winning team will stand a chance to represent Malaysia at the 2014 International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition(IMECE) in Montreal, Canada while the 1st runner-up will stand a chance to represent Malaysia to the SDC at the 2014 District G SPDC in Pakistan. Details about the game field, pre-trial inspection, scoring system and other rules & regulations are available on our conferences website. v) Mechanical Engineering & Innovation Exhibition (MechI-X) This will be an exhibition-style competition where participants are required to display their ideas and products using visual aids or prototypes. They will then have to describe and extensively explain their concept to a panel of judges. The panel of judges will score them based on their technical content and presentation skills. Participants who score the highest points will be crowned winners and stand a chance to represent Malaysia at the 2014 District G SPDC in Pakistan.
