Just in time for the Paleo f(x): Ancestral Momentum - Theory to Practice Symposium, I got my annual State Employee Health Screening this morning: BP: 118/80 Total Cholesterol: 181 mg/dl HDL Cholesterol: 74 mg/dl LDL Cholesterol: 90 mg/dl Triglycerides: 84 mg/dl Blood Glucose: 78 mg/dl While Ive been slipping a bit on certain things this past weekend (like drinking too many Bloody Marys and NorCal margaritas yesterday, damaging my sleep quality last night, and taking the lipid profile basically dehydrated and a little hungover, which could have affected the results), the nurses were again impressed at the very favorable results, especially given the very high HDL value. I told them Id been tracking my health parameters, and following this special way of eating... Let me guess, paleo? she said. I said Yes, bacon and eggs, pork chops and turnip greens. I bet I uttered the words nutrient density, saturated animal fat, and zero servings of whole grains per day ten times in the screening room, kinda loud, around some of my colleagues who were also being tested. I then launched into the supreme importance of the triglycerides value, and how if ones numbers are much over 100 mg/dL, then you need to start considering the possibility of insulin resistance. She agreed, and said that many of the diabetes doctors she knows are starting to take notice of this paleo approach and recommending it to their patients. She said that on a typical day screening state employees, 5 or 6 people is either eating paleo or asking about paleo...and this is Ala-freaking-bama. I dont claim to be any kind of health guru, at least not yet...but I am highly unlikely to get many of the common, chronic diseases of civilization caused by evolutionary mismatch because I trusted evolutionary theory and adaptationist logic more than I did medical authority or the concerns of academics who quibble about trivial matters or dismiss any attempt to actually USE evolutionary insights to actually do things as just so stories. So, once again, adaptationism wins and is the way to make progress in the world. ancestralmomentum/2014/04/paleo-fx/
