Just in time to celebrate Poverty Is Unnecessary Day, the new documentary, Poverty Inc. explores the industry of aid and who really benefits from the fight against poverty. The West has positioned itself as the protagonist of development, giving rise to a vast multi-billion dollar poverty industry. Yet leaders in the developing world are growing increasingly vocal in calling for change. From TOMSShoes to international adoption, solar panels to US agricultural subsidies, this film invites a new way of thinking about the people we label “the poor.” The film premieres at Austin Film Festival Saturday 10/25 at 9:30pm at the Bob Bullock IMAX Theater. Whole Planet Foundation Executive Director, Philip Sansone will participate in a panel discussion following the screenings. The documentary will also show Monday 10/27 at 4pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Austin Village location.
