Just inside the front doors of Grace Cathedral, an Episcopal community, at the very top of Nob Hill, is the AIDS Interfaith Memorial Chapel. The final major work by Keith Haring, completed in 1990 just a few weeks before he himself became an angel -- a beautiful triptych of hope, mourning, loss, new life, community -- serves as an altarpiece and is the focus of this holy space. (I decided that the angel on the upper part of the right panel is Keith.) Opposite hangs one of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt panels. In the corner is a book of names. Symbols of the worlds faith traditions adorn the walls. Candles burn in perpetuity to bear witness. Blessings on those who created this amazing space of welcoming, compassion, healing and remembrance. Todays pilgrimage will live in my heart forever.
