Just learnt that Peter Hessler, the former Beijing correspondent for The New Yorker and the author of acclaimed books - River Town, Oracle Bones, and Country Driving, was a child of a medical sociologist, Richard Hessler, whose advisor was a Chinese sociologist named Peter Kong-ming New (牛康民). Peter Hesslers mother is a historian. In addition, Peter had published an article in an anthropology journal before becoming a journalist. Is this how a good journalist was made?
