Just left a conversation with some Black law enforcement professionals, which was held in the Huey P. Newton & Bobby Seals student lounge at Merritt College of all places. It was a seminar for criminal justice students focused on how to interact with police, which I was invited to after expressing my views on the issue. They started off by showing this corny ass video about how if youre respectful, honest, and cooperative with police, you wont have any problems. Given the climate of relations between police and the Black community, the value of my time, and the cost of gas, I figured Id make this worthwhile. I asked two California Highway Patrol officers how they felt about watching Marlene Pinnock being beaten damn near to death by a CHP officer in LA and how they suggest we respond if it happens to our community or family members. One of the officers replied to the question, initially with some political jargon about having the whole story and knowing what transpired. I pressed him until he eventually said, in his own words, if that was my Mama, I would have went into a whoop ass mode, no matter what transpired. Theyre all our Mama. Ok.
