Just left a visitation for one of my soul sisters grandmothers. - TopicsExpress

Just left a visitation for one of my soul sisters grandmothers. They call her Maize (may-zee). Maize lived a long, full life and will be laid to rest tomorrow. As I watched the room fill with her friends and family, I thought how lovely it is to see someone so celebrated, so cherished. Her great grandchildren sat with me and told me stories of goin to the hair dresser once a week with their Maize and gettin Coca-Cola in the bottle and a pack of crackers, too. I used to do the same thing with my grandmother. I guess thats just a sweet memory many of us share. When folks spoke of Maize, their eyes lit up and I could see her beautiful life before me. When one of Maizes oldest friends walked in, my soul sister nudged me and said, Maize used to do everything with Ms. Shirley! I started smilin and I said, One day, when were really, really old, thats gonna be us. And it felt so good and right to say that. To be a part of all those people and know a life worth livin with friends and family all around. I wish I could tell yall all of Maizes stories. She was a fascinatin person who made tea cakes and dumplins. I wish I could tell her stories, but they arent mine to tell. I just love her journey and the spunk she possessed to live it the way she did. Most of all, I love seein who she was in the faces of those who loved her dearly.
