Just left the House floor, where I voted against the Keystone XL Pipeline. I understand why this bill is good for Canada and many Asian countries that will benefit from the sale of tar sands oil on the world market. I see little evidence that the project is very beneficial to the United States: Keystone creates very few permanent jobs, unlike U.S. natural gas exploration it has nothing to do with American energy assets and it will not contribute to our energy independence. Moreover, this pipeline project is contrary to making progress on climate change. Congress should focus instead on new projects that spur long-term job creation and increase our U.S. economic competitiveness. – John
