Just like everyone else youll see talking about this, I dont know what happened. What I do know is that I feel horrible for the parents pain and wish them comfort. I hope there is a solid investigation and the truth comes out. I do have some thoughts, though. 1) There is no justification for the looting and rioting. None. Its thuggery, its inappropriate, and it sends a terrible message. 2) If a police officer interacts with you, be polite and cooperative. Early reports were that the deceased and a friend were in the street and the officer asked them to get out of traffic. That should have been met with no problem and compliance. I dont know what caused an escalation, but I assure you that it was NOT compliance. 3) Im not a fan of the way the witnesses go out of their way to make the deceased appear to be an angel who did nothing wrong. Its been my experience that if the police are involved and something bad happens, its usually because someone wasnt behaving properly - the officer, the deceased, the witnesses. 4) We do not need more incitement to violence and lawlessness. We need leaders to demand that the people refrain from providing example of awful stereotypes that will be used to perpetuate racism and racist thought. 5) It is well past time that every police car in the United States be required to come with audio/visual recording equipment. The best cops love having them. The bad cops hate them. We need them to protect the good cops and to show the bad cops the door. In the meantime, treasure those that you love. Be patient. Trust that the truth will come out. Dont jump to conclude that the deceased was innocent and did nothing wrong or that he was at fault.
