Just looking for opinions regarding IEP students and calculators. I have quite a few MS students who are allowed to use one but the IEP is not very specific as to when and under what circumstances they are allowed to use it. It almost like a free for all and most feel they should be able to use it ALL THE TIME. I have students who bring their own and some who grab one immediately upon walking in the door. I laid awake last night thinking about the girl who knows how to simplify a fraction on her calculator and write down the answer. She has no idea how she is getting her answer, just that, thats what the calculator said. Are we doing these students an injustice? Do we just not worry about it since they will always have a calculator in their life? Or should I demand that our SPED teacher be more specific in writing the IEP?
