Just lost ALL the footage I took today - its just not there :-( Its hard enough going to pounds as it is - horrific places if you are attuned to how it must feel for the babies who have done absolutely nothing at all to deserve such a fate. People often ask ask me but whats wrong with the dogs in the pound - why are they there? Unspoken is always there must be a reason. I have never had a suitable answer I dont think - its always too defensive and even I am a skeptic when faced with defensive answers. But today I thought - imagine your mother is a crackhead. You are born to a crackhead mother. You were not a crackhead, you are not now a crackhead, you suffer the same problems any child has that has a series of people come in and out of their lives that are not the best influences, but then Family & Children Services comes and takes you away because your mother is a crack head. You did nothing wrong. You have never done anything wrong. Maybe you dont know how to spell as well as some of the other kids in school, because their mothers were not crackheads and helped them with their home work. Imagine you were that kid in jail looking out from the bars without even the ability to understand what was happening to you - just knowing you were now scared out of your brain - really scared for your life. Now replace that crackhead mother with a parent who is just moving. They cant find a unit with 2 bedrooms instead of one (they are more expensive you see) so they dump you at the local home for juvenile offenders. You are in the same place as kids who lived in the streets for years, you are in the same place as kids who are jailed for attacking other people - and there are 80 of you - who did nothing - compared to 2 who are jailed for a reason. Youre both jailed and society has decided you did the same thing wrong and are worth the same thing to them. Society has decided you are not worth much. They put you in a crowded place, frustrations and anger build up. You get no attention - or about 10 minutes a week, boredom and fear drive you crazy. The noise is constant - all day & night your fellow kids, scream and howl and cry themselves to sleep - you fear every noise. Your warders are not cruel but there are only 2 of them for over 200 of you. Little girls in cells with boys bigger than them, little boys in cells with boys bigger than them, some dont get their fare share of food - there is no law inside your cell for 23 hours of the day. Then you get nervous all the time, you get wise and try to run every time they open the door, you lash out before someone hurts you again. You run around like a maniac when they let you out - because the volunteers have less than 30 minutes a week for any one pet - so when you get your 30 minutes - after 2 or 3 weeks - you run around like crazy - the thrill, the fun, the excitement, the pure joy - so they say you are too hard to handle - they blame you for everything they made you. You went into the pound for no crime at all. There is nothing wrong with you. All that you did wrong - was your mother moved house. So next time you wonder what is wrong with pound dogs... know this; I have walked into an old man who just dumped his 14 year old dog and went back into the pound to get a dog, when asked “were you not the man who just dumped this dog?” (still sitting in the yard waiting to be processed) he said - yes but hes too old. Next time you wonder what is wrong with pound dogs ... know this; I have met a couple who brought in the family dog and when asked why they are dumping their dog said because we took her to the vet and shes needs an operation we cant afford- my wife is just out front having a smoke shell be back in a minute to explain Next time you wonder what is wrong with pound dogs .... know this; I have met a middle aged man bringing his sons purebred dog to the pound, with the Pets Paradise receipts and papers in his hand, my son bought him, he didnt have time for him and now hes a little s$%^ and we cant control him! Next time you wonder what is wrong with pound dogs ... know this; I have met a young couple holding their 6 month old kelpie in their arms. Why are you here? oh we are so sad our lease ran out so we cant keep him. Pray tell, how long did you think a dog would live for? After dumping a dog in a pound, that was previously rescued... I love her so much it breaks my heart, but she keeps getting out? I have tried everything this was the only choice I had - Have you thought about medication and training? oh no I could never medicate her But you dropped her in a kill pound that will kill her and has not made her available for adoption - only to rescue - she may very well be killed. Oh I couldnt medicate her - someone else can if they want to, but I couldnt So you would rather she is killed than give her a possible chance to rehabilitate? Shut up! I did everything I could, it was my only choice. So your only choice was to withhold the one thing may save her life and then dump her in a kill pound? Some ex pawrents are crackheads; others just mothers that moved house. Are poundies perfect? I hope not, because then they wouldnt be as much like all of us. Like me. Like you.
