Just made a quick stop at Target for some printer ink. In the the front of the store just past the registers was an older teenager with autism having a very loud tantrum because he couldnt get the DVD he wanted. Having been in that situation so many times, my heart was hurting for the child and for his caregiver. Everyone in the entire store just stopped and stared at them. It was so uncomfortable. I wanted to shout at all of them to stop. But then I saw something wonderful. The one person in the store who knew what to do. The security guard approached very calmly and slowly and asked the caregiver how he could help. I could see the gratitude on the caregivers face, as he answered that it would just take a few moments and the boy would calm down. Then hat security guard did the right thing by turning around and going back to his job. I was upset about all the people staring until I realized maybe they didnt know what to do like the security guard did. And so Im telling you now, if you see this situation, offer gently to help. And if the caregiver is busy trying to control the situation, understand that the best thing you can do is give him or her space and go about your business and the worst thing you can do is stop and stare. It may look scary, but remember, this is a child. Who is suffering. Just something I needed to say.
