Just met an environmental biologist working at a cafe. Hes been - TopicsExpress

Just met an environmental biologist working at a cafe. Hes been working 2 jobs to help pay off his college debt and takes up side jobs to cover food and other living expenses. I asked him about his thoughts on alternative energy vs. fracking and his response was amazing. I was shocked that some dude at a coffee shop just gave me one of the most reasonable breakdowns on sustainable energy Ive ever heard. I was even more amazed that someone so academically qualified was stuck pouring my coffee. How many college grads paid $20,000+ a year to get a job washing dishes after graduation? How can we have the leading minds in sustainable innovation pouring coffee and waiting tables paying off student loans, while the richest and most barbaric minds insist on using outdated industrial technology at great financial gain, yet at the cost of driving our planets precious ecosystems towards extinction? Why does economic growth mean environmental destruction? Clean energy is not fantasy, it is a very possible reality that deserves national attention and support from the federal government. If we continue to turn a blind eye to the environmental destruction caused by outdated processes like fracking, coal seam gas, and other poisonous methods of resource extraction, our options for peaceful and prosperous existence will be greatly diminished. We live in a time where technology and compassionate commerce can bring environmental balance and economic prosperity. Why trade the well being of future generations so a couple oil barons can make billions off of fracking while the workers doing the hard labor make a couple thousand dollars a week but forever damage the lakes and rivers and waters and farmland that are integral to our survival? There are well educated people/organizations out there with real solutions to our energy/resources issues, but our current platform of scientific advancement is being crippled by big business while our education system puts the brightest minds of younger generations in debt. This imbalance is detrimental to our survival as a race and these practices should seem outrageous to anyone with half a mind in this technological age. The current standards for happiness include an iPhone, a flatscreen, and a commuter car, but those advances and pleasantries mean nothing without clean air, clean water, and wholesome foods. We have a real opportunity here to take the advances weve made in technology and actually APPLY them to our communities and energy systems. This isnt a hippie movement. Wanting clean air and clean water is not tree-hugger mentality. No matter how fiscally conservative you are, or whatever you stand to gain from natural gas, it means nothing compared to what we stand to lose without our rivers and waters and soil. Educate yourself on renewable energy. Sign petitions, talk to your communities, and if fracking is in your area, contact your local politicians and be persistent. Take a stand for the environment. Speak for the earth but be kind and patient to those who are so distanced from their hearts and their own bodies that they cant see our planet for what it is. There is more than enough negative energy involved in the debate on climate change, so we might as well be the kindest ambassadors possible and do our part to participate in making our beautiful planet everything it can be. Anything is possible, so lets abandon the fear and move our future towards a paradigm of paradise. Theres a fork in the road here. One direction leaves us with poisoned wells and water wars and the other is open book, a future with solar energy and the opportunity to use our lives as human beings, not just to crunch numbers and watch TV and buy stuff, but to create a standard in energy that can sustain the wonders of this planet and allow our children to prosper.
