Just over 6 and a half years ago, Lesley Elliott was at home, her beautiful young daughter, Sophie, was upstairs, packing to move to Wellington after gaining a dream job. Sophies ex-boyfriend turned up to talk to her and they went to her bedroom to do so. At one point, Sophie, obviously uncomfortable, came downstairs and told her mum Clayton Weatherston wasnt talking at all and so Lesley told her she should go upstairs and tell him she needed him to leave as she was too busy. When she did, Weatherston proceeded to stab Sophie 216 times and cut pieces off her as he brutally killed her. Lesley tried to get into the room, but Clayton intervened and locked her out. So on the other side of that door, Lesley would have had to endure the most horrific nightmare How completely devastating!! And yet, along with having to deal with this hideous crime committed against Sophie, in their own home, the impact this had on her family, Sophies brothers and father, Lesley has made something amazing out of an absolutely devastating situation. We congratulate Lesley for her selfless violence prevention work she has embarked on through the education, awareness and empowerment of young women.
