Just passed a very young couple waiting to cross Main Street in the town where I live. They were bundled against the cold with great joy on their faces and the right word to describe the figure they cut amid the glow of Christmas lights is alive. They were clearly lost in the moment, living it to the full and (most probably) in love. The world throws a lot at us over the years but if the incarnation is about anything its about the mission of God to renew his intentions for us when he made us and set us in tranquility. Look, I know this does not exhaust the meaning of God come among us in the flesh, or the meaning of every life, but if we are paying attention to the scriptural story this union of female and male—together bearers of Gods image, together completing this image, alive without self-conscious nagging and none of the sorrowful burdens of our rebellion, living in the moment, a marriage of two persons made one—is the thread that shows up again and again and again in the sacred tapestry from start to finish, from the garden to the wedding feast in the New Jerusalem. And its a violation of something very valuable to disturb these edenic moments. We might be jealous of their reverie and unconscious bliss but thats not a gospel attitude. No, we should celebrate it, cherish it, protect it. Time and the world and the burden of sin will do their best on them anyway. Whenever we glimpse this state or inhabit it ourselves with our beloved we should be grateful for the God of relationship whose love binds and shields hearts.
