Just penned this letter to send off to my state and Fed. legislators over the solar powered cells for our roads and sidewalks, etc. What do you think? *****An astounding new American technological innovation has recently been brought to my attention that I sincerely believe deserves your support at the legislative-level for the benefit of our state, but also our nation, as well as the planet on which we live! In 2006 Scott and Julie Brusaw invented a new form of solar panels in the shape of hexagons (honeycomb cells) that are especially formulated to withstand all wear-and-tear of our streets, sidewalks, driveways, highways, parking lots, roads, bike paths, athletic courts, and interstates, as well as to eventually replace them! This may sound like a pipe dream, but their project has already received two phases of funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) in order to construct a series of prototypes for practical use, because the FHA is aware that our infrastructure is badly in need of an update. To start off the panels—which can be replaced individually should one malfunction—are covered with an especially textured and tempered glass made from recycled glass. The cells are also slightly heated, meaning that roadways constructed from them will be much more safe and even save lives during the cold winter months when the snow causes unnecessary casualties and wasted public tax money due to salt (which degrades our roads) and sand. They will also save on tax money by needing to be maintained much less than out current transportation system, because potholes and the like don’t need to be constantly and laboriously repaired. An infrastructure based around these solar cells will also create and sustain many “Green Jobs” that will employ fellow Americans. Each cell also contains a series of LED lights that can easily be programed when dividing lanes for a highway, an interstate, as well as warnings of what is coming ahead. They will even provide illumination at night, which will make driving far safer for our citizens. These lights may also be used on an outdoor athletic court if you want to play basketball, soccer, our for-square, etc. through pre-programmed configurations. The possibilities are almost endless! Financially and environmentally, these cells are highly cost-effective and pay for themselves within their own lifetime and will generate all the electricity that a city, business, and homeowners will ever require. We may ever draw upon this reservoir of limitless solar-power based electricity to “fuel” electric vehicles and permanently end our addiction to fossil fuels that are choking the life out of this planet we call home, because 97% of the Scientific community have concluded that Climate Change is directly attributed to the human Industrial Age. As you will recall it is our addiction to oil that led to the Exxon Valdese and to the BP Gulf Oil disasters! In the Gulf the residents are still suffering from the contamination of their gulf, the wetlands, and chemical burns and health problems from the toxic dispersants that literally has the side effect of drawing the oil into the body on a cellular level and trebles the toxicity of the oil. I have often believed that the use of the internal combustion engine is as antiquated as the horse-drawn carriage! The U.S. could really cash-in with a solar-powered electrical infrastructure when compared to German, which generates 74% of its electricity from solar power and other renewable sources such as wind. However, the U.S. is a vastly more abundant and solar-rich country than is Germany, which—according to the Photovoltaic Solar Resource published in the “Washington Post”—is as bright and as cloudless as the state of Alaska near the arctic. When compared to other countries, the vast majority of the U.S. is as “well lit” as Spain near the Mediterranean. This infrastructure is in need of federal and statewide support of our lawmakers to make it a reality from coast-to-coast. Not only are we ready for this technology, but we deserve it as Iowans and as Americans. Sincerely, [Name]
