Just read a seemingly innocuous article in the Arts section of the NYTimes about a school group talk back at the current Broadway production of Of Mice and Men. Here is an excerpt: “Did you read the book?” asked one of the 206 high school students invited to the post-show discussion, one of several that the cast regularly participates in with school groups. A few seconds of silence passed before Leighton Meester, who plays the coquettish wife of the hot-tempered cowboy Curley, said, “I read it.” No one else spoke for a moment. “I think I was the only who did,” she added. So, just to recap: In a cast of ten people, a cast of well-paid professionals working at the highest level in their industry, a cast that includes James Franco and Chris ODowd, it appears that only ONE person has done the bare minimum of proper preparation and has read the monumental classic American novel on which the play is based. I. Quit. Forever.
