Just read an article in the SCMP about overseas doctors in Hong Kong. I think that Choi Kin should shuffle off to his retirement home and stop playing politics. And Louis come on, it takes incredulity a bit far to start blaming Medical Students for the immoral protectionist position maintained by the HKMA which is completely unethical and unprofessional. Strong words Mr Burd! Not really. But words that are needed as the Medical Profession in Hong Kong is in a mess. For those that are not aware of the situation, Hong Kong is no longer under British Colonial Rule. It is now part of the Motherland or the Mainland. (I have to say that I have always thought that a bit quaint having lived throughout my time in Hong Kong, in the New Territories). Yet at the same time, in a gesture to the changing world, the PRC has granted Hong Kong an unprecedented autonomy in determining in its own affairs. The expectation? That Hong Kong was an international city and was up to speed with concepts of governance, anti-corruption practices and evolved and responsible professions. Sadly, not so. Corruption, in its broader sense is alive and well in Hong Kong and, because I have had personal opportunities to experience the consequences, a primary drive for the corruption is an arrogant belief that truth is not a function of proven fact but a matter of social convenience. To wit: an Alumni of the Diocesans Boys School can tell verifiable miss-truths which will be accepted as the Truth, not because of any factual evidence but because the teller is a DBS boy (oh, and they dont lie). Aaron Lee do pass on my greetings to CK at the next council meeting but seriously was there no Medical Ethics teaching in Hong Kong when the British were here? You know, the basic things like we are honoured and privileged to serve as doctors and will put the needs of our patients first and foremost in our professional lives, and this is the ethical basis on how we fulfill that commitment ...... or was it taught as a business? Just trying to understand the aversion to professionalism in some of the older generation of doctors in Hong Kong!
