Just read an interesting article in a German magazine (Spiegel) about Germanys involvement in the war in Afghanistan. They are taking stock after 13 years of war, and are coming to some devastating conclusions. Overall, not too surprising I guess, but I didnt know the extent of some of it. There are some positives as well. Looks like more people have access to mobile phones and the Internet than ever, which is good, as they get exposure to the outside world. (I guess one can debate whether that would have happened anyway or not, but the fact is that this positive change has happened). In some parts, it now also seems to be easier for girls to get an education. On the downside however, Afghanistan is a more dangerous and less stable place than ever. The Taliban are stronger than they have been (although the article didnt exactly tell me whether that means even since before the war or not... it certainly sounded like stronger than they have ever been). Afghanistan also has more of a drug trade then ever. They now control 90% of the worlds opium market. So much for cleaning that up. Not surprisingly, the conclusion of the article is that this was all one big mistake.
