Just read this quote and it follows along with a theme that has kept me up nights the past couple of weeks, especially this week: Actually, all education is self-education. A teacher is only a guide, to point out the way, and no school, no matter how excellent, can give you education. What you receive is like the outlines in a child’s coloring book. You must fill in the colors yourself.” ― Louis LAmour It drills right to the point. It is essentially the difference between learning and education; learning is controlled entirely by an individual and never has to end, while the other is imposed and often so impersonal it makes your head spin. Love the analogy of a coloring book even more. I fight an honorable, hard fight daily to make education individual and more, that it is controlled by the student so it becomes deeply-held learning. The best learned trait, in my opinion, is confidence to take on what comes next. But since that is hard to measure, the politicians, political appointees, and experts see to it that only a proscribed program works, only certain things to be learned matter. Im going to keep pushing the issue of people (of all ages, genders, colors, etc.) using the colors that matter most to them on the outlines in their own coloring books. Yes, I believe measurement helps me and others be accountable, but I also believe some things simply cannot be counted and few things can be counted well with narrow political agendas and indifferent bureaucratic preening. Hearts and minds. Happy Sunday everybody.
