Just received........BORDESHOLM GERMANY NEWSPAPER REVIEW: Savoy Theater: Fuller Trecks Through All the Registers of the Blues-Register Once an opener for such blues legends as Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker and in between an old master in his own right: Guitarist Ray Fuller from Ohio delivers rock-solid material on the third-to-last stop of his tour of Europe, even when the number of attendees is rather negligible. The American with the cowboy hat can, in the meantime, now look back on a 40-year career. He is a master of the slide-ABCs with the bottleneck on his finger, but also shows with his stringed-adventures that he can do much more than just the 12-bar blues basics, bringing out the exclamation points with his solos. Solos, during which he is not to be stopped by anything – not even broken guitar strings. “If Keith Richards can play with missing strings, Ill manage, too!” was the message Fuller delivered to his audience. And was he ever right! Strings broke on his Strat and 1966 Silvertone slide-model guitars, and his Yamaha only had five to begin with, rather than six. Plenty of experience and an enormous repertoire provide lots of variety. Whether Boogie, Rock n Roll, Chicago, Texas or Louisiana Blues, Fuller has everything up his sleeve, avoiding gimmicks in favor of the purely musical. His show included many pieces which can be heard on his new live album, released earlier this year, recorded at Buddy Guys Legends Club in Chicago. Fullers resurrection of songs made famous by Jimmy Reed, John Lee Hooker, Howlin Wolf, Eddie Clearwater, Slim Harpo, Otis Rush and Jerry Lee Lewis are especially worth a listen. The American had drummer Ryan Jewell at his side - a compatriot who usually gets around in jazzier circles - who got maximal sound out of his minimalist kit. On his other side was the nimble-fingered, exuberant Lenny Fatigati on Bass. The trio perform so remarkably easily and laid-back that it seems as though the musicians sweat actually comes from the spotlights.
