Just received a press release about a new extreme Alpine jacket that retails at £750. The matching pants cost £635. Now I appreciate this is top-end gear but is any outdoor clothing worth that kind of money or is outdoor gear just becoming too expensive? After a day wandering around outdoor shops in Keswick last week I was astounded at some of the prices for gear. To be honest some of the prices were quite obscene. On the other hand there were some good bargains from lower end companies on display. I wonder how many mountaineers will spend £750 on a jacket, or will that kind of mountaineer expect to get his or her kit for nothing? Are ordinary hill goers subsidising the free kit for the elite? Interesting issue...
