Just received my itinerary for mountain biking Laos. Come explore some of southeast asia with me. Contact me if your interested. Leaving in Feb returning in April 2014. Tons of single track available. SOUTHERN TRIP Day 1 50 mi. Flat, no climbing really. Good warm up day. Ride through rice fields and along the southern side of Phou Khoa Khuay (white buffalo horn) mountain range. Starting Elevation (SE): 175mAccommodation (Acc): Guesthouse Peak Elevation (PE): 193mRoad Condition (RC): Paved good condition Ending Elevation (EE): 170m Day 2 47 mi. Another pretty flat day some very small rolling hills. SE: 172mAcc: Guest house PE: 175mRC: Paved EE: 156m Day 3 92mi. Rolling hills get a little bigger. Will probably feel like all climbing. Very long day, will need an early start. May need to take two days to do this leg, let’s see how we feel. SE: 156mAcc: Guesthouse PE: 652mRC: Paved/Dirt EE: 381m Day 4 45mi. Small rolling hills, relatively flat. Tam Pla At Buddha Cave. Waterfall at end of the day, though probably small. If we are feeling strong we can ride another 25mi. to a what looks like a really nice guest house near Tong Lor cave. SE: 357mAcc: Guesthouse PE: 588mRC: Paved (Guessing) EE: 237m Day 5 70mi. Starts off pretty flat for about 15mi., then some steep 200m. hills. A lot of ups and downs, last 8mi. seems to be downhill. Will probably feel like a lot of climbing. We will ride through the Phou Hinboun protected area, and go through Tong Lor cave (the 7km cave we missed last time). Should be a beautiful day. SE: 302mAcc: Guesthouse PE: 390mRC: 70% dirt 30%paved EE: 197m Day 6 50mi. Pretty flat day, ends with a little downhill. Head West towards the Vietnamese border on highway 12, should be very scenic. SE: 195mAcc: GH PE: 410mRC: 20%dirt 80%paved EE: 203m Day 7 61mi. Starts off flat, and gradually climbs up to 432m. Last 8 or so miles are downhill. Begin heading South on dirt roads through karst mountains, and nice forests. If we are lucky we will find some strawberries! SE: 198mAcc: GH PE: 432mRC: Dirt Road (DR) EE: 239m Day 8 30mi. Flaaaaat, easy day. Keep Going South until linking up with Highway 9. SE: 238mAcc: GH PE: 238mRC: Paved (from what I can see on Google Earth) EE: 188m Day 9 37mi. Almost identical to day 8. We might be able to combine days 8 and 9 depending on how we feel. Ride SW along HWY 9 then head South when we reach the war museum. We will pass a Ho Chi Minh trail park. SE: 188mAcc: GH PE: 400mRC: Paved? EE: 267m Day 10 31mi. 275m climb over 8 miles (gradual climb), other than that, another flat easy day. Cross the Xe Lanong river. Lots of war scrap, and river crossings. More Karst formations and beautiful scenery. SE: 267mAcc: GH PE: 672mRC: Dirt?? EE: 482m Day 11 50mi. Gradual uphill for the first 8 miles, then a pretty steep 5mi downhill to flat land. Should be a pretty cruisy day. SE: 486mAcc: GH PE: 685mRC: 80% Dirt EE: 186m Day 12 55mi. Flat day. SE: 184mAcc: GH PE: 274mRC: Dirt (Logging track/HCM road(Hmong military)) EE: 149m Day 13/14 100mi. First 20 miles are pretty flat, second 20 miles go from 236m-1158m, then it is about 30 miles of down hill with a few small 2mi climbs. The rest of this leg is flat. Ride through Xe Piane National Park. SE: 150mAcc: Camping PE: 1153mRC: Dirt Road EE: 91m Day 15 67mi. Flat. Ride East through the Xe Piane protected area, and some really nice forests. End at the Kingfisher Resort (just to check prices, if it is too pricey, there are some community bungalows nearby). SE: 87mAcc: GH if we can finish in a day. PE: 191mRC: Dirt EE: 180m Day 16 59mi. Flat. Head South along HWY 13, and then cross the Mekong and finish the day on dirt roads. It should be really nice once we get off of the main road. SE: 201mAcc: GH PE: 201mRC: 50% paved 50% dirt EE: 84m Day 17 15mi. To Don Det (Touristy area of 4000 Islands) we can spend a couple of days here to relax and regroup, very nice place, lots of good beer here. Acc: GH
