Just received this update from Barbara Richardson - Metro Chief of Staff - on the Silver Lines first weekday in operation. Exciting stuff! It is long, but worth the read if you want to see how things are going! #SilverLine #HerndonStation2018 Dear Champions: Anticipation was high, the sun was shining, Teddy Roosevelt was dancing, and when the ribbon was cut on Saturday, customers were ready to ride the Silver Line. We could not have asked for a better day. This weekends grand opening celebration was well attended with more than 500 participants, with the inaugural train serving hundreds more travelers. Trains operated reliably, without any delays. I thought that you might enjoy watching the recap of the festivities via these two video links from the Washington Post and Wall Street Journal. WSJ: youtube/watch?v=J_Zx2wvswLk&feature=youtube_gdata_player WaPo: wapo.st/1rnRXsY The Silver Line is off to a good start on the first weekday of service. As of 10 am today, ridership at the five new Silver Line stations totaled 9,715 passenger trips. Wiehle Ave-Reston East was the 12th busiest station on the system today (comparable to Columbia Heights) and more than Crystal City and Glenmont, for example. Tysons Corner station proved to be a destination for morning commuters as well. This mornings commute operated reliably as well. Extra Metro staff were on hand at the five new stations, as were personnel from Fairfax Connector, to make sure customers could easily navigate the line. Anecdotally, we began to see the predicted migration of some Orange line riders to Silver, with reports of less onboard crowding and lighter than usual parking on the Orange Line. Finally, I want to bring to your attention two great pieces from the Post that used the celebration of the Silver Line to call attention for the region to come together to identify funding for 8 car trains and another future rail tunnel across the Potomac. My special thanks to Jim Dinegar and Jim Corcoran for leading the charge and Stewart Schwartz for providing support in the column. washingtonpost/local/post-silver-line-dc-region-should-buy-rail-cars-for-metro-add-a-potomac-crossing/2014/07/26/c7d8e3ec-1467-11e4-9285-4243a40ddc97_story.html washingtonpost/opinions/opening-doors-with-mass-transit/2014/07/25/016dd02e-1362-11e4-9285-4243a40ddc97_story.html Look alive region.
