Just released: PHILOMENA with Judi Dench and Steve Coogan Imagine this: a young Irish girl becomes pregnant and, rejected by her family, is taken in by Catholic nuns. When her son is three, the nuns arrange for an American adoption and the heartbroken mother never sees him again. Some fifty years go by and the mother, with the help of a journalist, embarks on a journey to America in the hope of finding her son. PHILOMENA is based on a true story and it is nothing if not heart-wrenching. To me, though, the most interesting thing about the film is the relationship between the aging mother with her unwavering religious faith and the well-educated, cynical journalist.
