Just remember guys that most of the standies we get and Re train - TopicsExpress

Just remember guys that most of the standies we get and Re train are in "race condition". They do not come to us as huge fat mountains as they are used to be athletes. This means they can be quite slender and muscular, trainers do not want excess fat slowing the horses down. You do not see an overweight sprinter so keep this in mind when looking at these horses. Also some are big bodied naturally and some are a finer type. It depends on the particular horse as it does with people, there are some big people and some small people who all eat the same thing and yet it effects them differently. Age also can play a big part in the condition of a horse. When a horse is younger they will go through growth spurts where they seem to lose weight and yet gain height, then they will go through some fat stages where they bulk up again. Just remember that all horses are different, yes your horse at home may be a lovely big fatty but it may not have the history of another horse :) Our horses are currently being fed a mixture of crushed barley, lupin, some oats and hay as well as the grass out on the four hundred acres.
