Just returned from El Valle de Anton in Panama, the 2nd largest - TopicsExpress

Just returned from El Valle de Anton in Panama, the 2nd largest inhabited volcano caldera in the world. It was absolutely stunning! Located in cloud forest, its a cool climate. I was guided on a 6 hour hiking tour by a local guide, with a monkey riding his shoulder the whole way. The hike was steep, up 2500 feet, and he was in his 60s and faster than me! We finished the hike in a waterfall bathing pool, to clean off the sweat- where i was joined by some local girls for some almost skinny dipping, in our undies. Met some great locals, and a group from the Smithsonian in my hotel, studying the local frogs, who took me on one of their night time jungle treks up a mountain stream looking for frogs. Saw lots of frogs, toads and tarantulas, but we didnt locate the holy grail frog they were searching for, the almost extinct Golden Frog - a Panamanian legend which brings good luck for those lucky enough to see one. . . I did not see one in the wild, but I did at least see it in the local zoo.
