Just returned home from The Chosen at the Forestburgh Playhouse. Talk about hitting the far end of the spectrum with regard to Le Cage Aux Folles two weeks ago. From dance in the aisles fun at Le Cage, to the most somber evening Ive ever experienced at an onstage performance. The five man cast were so authentic that one really could not help but feel the gut wrenching, soul touching horror he was experiencing, when Reb Saunders was counting out one million, three million, six million, referring to the Jews butchered by Hitler, or enter the mind of Reb when he spoke to Danny through Reuven about the reasoning behind the silence, or feel the fiery flicker triumph when Reuven Sr. spoke at Madison Square Garden! I dont know about anyone else, but for me there was a constant undertone of sadness through the entire production...almost a futile sadness brutally underscoring the suffering of a people; the near extinguishing of a nation. This was very poignantly brought to life as I listened to the quiet weeping of some around us...were their parents victims of the Holocaust, or maybe they themselves suffered at the hands of the Nazis, or maybe not the Nazis. Maybe the suffering of Israel brought to life on the stage was reminding them of the suffering Israel endures still to this day and will probably continue to endure until all is consumed. Concept of the evening, Silence can be the greatest of teachers. Cant wait for next season!!!
