Just sat down to do some work on my office computer and found this essay, written by a very talented person who lives here: Theatre requires skills that many would disregard. The basic knowledge of geometry and history are needed to bring a story to the stage so the audience can be enveloped in the story and characters. If a show does not have the appeal to the people, no one will come see it. Geometry helps me out when I am building a set piece or platform because the process is harder than it looks. Every angle must be exact or else it falls apart, or someone gets injured. To make these pieces safe for actors, the design must be something that is necessary to the plot or director’s choice, and must be functional. Then the builders must adhere to the plans and make in happen whether out of wood or steel. History is a major part of theatre because one must know the ins and outs of Shakespearean form to understand a story and its meanings. One must be able to analyze archetypes and use this knowledge to identify with the person they’re portraying. To become this person, one must substitute a real or imaginary circumstance that makes the situation real for the story and the actor react emotionally. Even though theatre seems like it is merely fun and games, It requires a great deal of focus, skill, and respect. To be a good actor requires respect for the arts and an imagination that can go places that not every person can imagine and make real for the stage or camera.
