Just saw the figure for the JAMAICAN budget, 2015--in billions; not too long from now it will be in trillions. Comparing this figure with those 15 yrs ago, its obvious: an exponential rise in inflation, a serious erosion in money value; a progressively shrinking GDP; larger gap in balance of trade and hence more gloom, ahead. The Jamaican dollar is now used to the play the board game, MONOPOLY. In a place where dishonesty is a way of life, its highly possible that one can drop a 1000 dollar bill anywhere and go back and find it in the same spot days later. This should be of concern to every citizen and given the huge comparative disadvantages in the global economic framework, the agenda - globalization --as is, should hasten its demise, including that of every other Caribbean country. It is the reason why I believe a Federal Caribbean is urgent NOT to preserve the well-being of a Jamaica nor a Trinidad nor a Barbados, but that of a Caribbean. I am beginning to think that my ancestors made a grave error after slavery--they should have headed back home. A future Caribbean will have citizens wishing that this was true.
