Just saw this - Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas. The origin of Xmas lies within the Greek language. The Greek word for Christ begins with the Greek letter chi, which is represented by a symbol similar to the letter X in the modern Roman alphabet, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός . The -mas part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass. There is a common misconception that the word Xmas stems from a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas[3] by taking the Christ out of Christmas, but its use dates back to the 16th century. I used to feel bad when I wrote XMAS - wont anymore.
