Just saw this... the most reasoned response to my op ed piece over at the CA site... The lack of vision among our leaders has been baffling for decades. For those you who believe the Coliseum is useless look east to the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville. Its older than the Coliseum and serves the purpose of being the mid-size venue for Nashville/Davidson County. Memphis/Shelby County currently doesnt have a mid-size venue. Promoters have to rent the Landers Center located in Southaven MS. Numerous concerts and events that would have been in Memphis at the Coliseum are now showcased at the Landers Center. This is revenue that would have been going into the coffers of Memphis/Shelby County. The non-compete clause agreed to with the Grizzlies regarding the FedExForum was totally unnecessary. The events that would have played the Coliseum instead go to the Landers Center. So guess who ends up with the short end of the stick...Memphis/Shelby County and its citizens. Its strange how our leaders nor the Grizzlies couldnt see this. There was a local promoter that wanted to revitalize the Coliseum but the powers that be didnt want that to happen. Again, the lack of vision in this city/county is baffling!!
