Just saw this too, really belated! ph Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, turns 77 today. Born on March 6, 1937, in Yaroslavi Oblast in central Russia, her father was a tractor driver and her mother worked in a textile factory. In 1962, while working with her mother in the factory, Tereshkova was recruited into the cosmonaut program. Her interest and expertise in parachuting led to her selection. She and four other women underwent training, but only Tereshkova would go on to complete a solo mission. Following the historic 1963 Vostok 6 flight, Tereshkova became a spokesperson for the Soviet Union, promoting education and science. She was honored with the United Nations Gold Medal of Peace. Most recently she was an Olympic flag carrier at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. In this 2010 photo, Valentina Tereshkova (left) poses with NASA astronaut Cady Coleman.
