Just send this to whatif@xkcd : I have witnessed the fundraiser/awareness campaign ALS Ice Bucket Challenge spread from the recesses of my social network to my close friends and family. The idea is that you pour ice water on yourself to raise awareness for Lou Gehrigs disease. Once done, you nominate three others to dump water on their own heads and they each nominate three others and so on. Each person is supposed to respond to the nomination within 24 hours. Its a very unpleasant version of Pay It Forward. What happens if we treat the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as a disease? How long would it take to freeze everyone in the world? Of course by now, he knows about the challenge. Lets see if I get a response. My calculations say, under ideal circumstances, it would take between 20 and 21 days to infect the entire world: assuming everyone is only infectious for 24 hours and each person can only infect 3 people.
